Southwest Montana was a very different place in 1977: Big Sky Ski Resort was only 4 years old. Bozeman’s population hovered around 20,000 people, and Livingston was still very much a railroad town. That’s the same year Congress enacted legislation creating two Wilderness Study Areas in our backyard: Hyalite-Porcupine-Buffalo Horn Wilderness Study Area in the heart of the Gallatin Range and the Taylor Hilgard Wilderness Study Area in the Madison Range – some of which is now the Lee Metcalf Wilderness.
